Information management systems

Overview

This chapter represents the first in the Second Section of study for this chapter. This second section deals with information technology and systems, and their management within the context of a transport and logistics organisation.

At the very beginning of this section we need to explode one myth. The impact of information communication and technology (ICTs) systems on management is not a recent event. Nor is it one contemporary managers can argue is isolated in its severity. Since the mid to late 1950s discussion has increased on two key aspects to information systems (IS) and its impact on managers. This included the role managers can play in shaping the introduction of information technology (IT) within an organisation’s IS environment, and how their roles and responsibilities are impacted by these changes.

The ability to identify and source information needs is a complex and multi-dimensional issue. It is not restricted to IS issues. In earlier topic areas we dealt with work-based communication and explored the many dimensions to sourcing and communicating information. In this topic area we will focus on systems that enable managers to capture, transfer, retrieve and report information that has relevance to the organisation’s purpose. Information and data that is contextual and related to organisational purpose will be isolated and studied as knowledge in the next topic area. While we focus on ‘information’ our study will differentiate levels of information and the development of systems to manage it within an information rich setting.
