4.8.3 Pragmatic nationalism

The radical view and the free market view are the extremes of a spectrum and we would be unlikely to find any nation subscribing wholly to one view or the other. Depending on the political stance of their governments, nations tend to lie on either side of the mid-line and at varying distances from it (that is, pragmatic nationalism). However, following the decline of communism across the world, there is a general movement toward the free market end of the spectrum.

Your textbook provides examples of the three views and a useful table (on page 244) for revision purposes. Turn to it now.

Activity 4.5

Explain how the political ideology of the government of Malaysia might influence the process of negotiation with an Australian (or your home country's) MNE.

In the next four sections, we examine the costs and benefits of FDI to both the host and home countries. We will consider the host country first and begin with the benefits to that country.
