5.4.4 MERCOSUR
MERCOSUR began in 1988 as a free trade pact between Argentina and Brazil . This was fairly successful, and in 1990 Paraguay and Uruguay were admitted. The aim of a full free trade area by the end of 1994 was achieved. With 200 million inhabitants (150 million of them in Brazil ), MERCOSUR is the world's fourth-largest trade bloc after the EU, NAFTA and the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN). Recent attempts to establish a customs union have so far been unsuccessful due to the economic instability of member countries.
