1.1 What is marketing?

Marketing is such a familiar term these days that we all have some sense of what it means. However, the term is used in different ways, it has different levels of meanings, and its precise definition has changed over the years. So to use the term meaningfully, we need to arrive at a shared definition.

Activity 1.1

Write down now what you think 'marketing' means. You can do this in two stages if you like.

1. Write down the key words which you think identify characteristics or some of the meaning of 'marketing'.
2. Then write down what you think the definition of the term might be.

It is important that you do this now. If you read on to get clues and write down your ideas later you may not learn as much as you could. You will be asked later to compare what you write down now with what you learn in the following sections.
