1.4 The role of perception in the communication process
Perception is the active interpretation of stimuli and is the process by which people select, organise and interpret data in order to give meaning to a message.
Activity 1d
1. Read the section on perception in Chapter 1 of Dwyer (2005) and Reading 1.2. Answer the following questions:
- Why might the interpretation of the same message vary between people? Provide examples to illustrate your answer.
- How can you minimise communication barriers caused by prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination?
- How does 'context' affect perception?
- Discuss the gap between intent and effect.
- Why is empathy important?
2. Consider the following. Do not provide written answers, simply think about each question given what you have read about perception.
- To what extent are we seeing only that which we intended to see?
- How possible is it to know (everything about) another person?
- On what basis are we forming an impression of another?
- Do you filter evidence (eg focus more on information consistent with your own views)?
