10.4 Improving organisational communication

Effective and efficient organisational communication is crucial to goal achievement. It requires analysis and understanding of the organisation's structure as well as the necessity for employees to demonstrate competent communication skills like those presented in previous chapters.

Activity 10c

  1. Read through pages 237-241 of the textbook.
  2. Next time you visit an organisation, such as a large department store, analyse the interaction between different members of staff, particularly those between different levels of staff. Did you observe any communication problems? Do you think the problems are due to the organisation's structure and culture or the individuals'? Why? How might the problems be solved? If you observed no problems, analyse what the organisation is doing right.
  3. Read through Readings 10. 1 and 10.2. Summarise the necessary communication skills required for an effective manager.
  4. Evaluate Kaye's (1994) communication model (discussed in Reading 10.2 and Chapter 1 of your text) as a tool for determining communication skills required for an effective manager.
