10.6.2 The stages of the interview
1. Preparing for the interview
The interviewer must establish goals for the interview; obtain necessary background data; formulate critical questions; determine the interviewee's needs, personality and attitudes; secure data that will be needed during the interview; and select an appropriate interview site.
2. Conducting the interview
By establishing a comfortable climate and asking appropriate questions, the interviewer can draw out crucial information for evaluation. The interview structure should suit the purpose of the interview.
Activity 10f
- Read through the section on interviews on pages 363-375 of the textbook.
- Have you experienced any of the interview types outlined in the textbook? What were effective/ineffective behaviours in the interview? If you have not experienced an interview, watch an interview on television or ask a friend or relative about an interview they have experienced. Look for effective and ineffective interview techniques.
- Complete exercise 1 of the Skill Builder activity on page 375 of the textbook.
This chapter has provided an overview of organisational communication. Organisational communication involves all the skills covered in this subject (including those in chapters 11-12). As organisations are often complex structures made up of various communication networks, the potential for miscommunication and misinterpretation is high. Consequently, competent communication is not only important to maintain good working relationships within the organisation and with the external environment, it is also important to ensure the right things happen at the right time and in the right way to avoid costly mistakes.
Summary activities
- Imagine you are going for a job interview for a position as a manager in a company you would like to work for. Research the skills you would require for such a position including the communication skills for such organisational activities as meetings and interviews. Your research might include looking at the recruitment pages in the paper, talking to people in similar positions or talking to a recruitment agency. Which skill areas do you need to develop? How can you develop these?
- Read through Reading 10.4 and 10.5. What new challenges are being posed to business communications?
