12.1 Overview of customer service
An increase in local and global competition has encouraged companies to recognise the importance of providing quality customer service as part of their competitive strategy. The world is a very competitive place and in order to survive and prosper you need to treat your customers well. They will demand nothing less and they will go elsewhere if you don't give them good service. As there are now so many consumer-based choices, buyer loyalty is rare: people change their patronage without even thinking twice about it. If you don't like your doctor, you find another one. If you don't like the job the motor mechanic does, you find another one. If you have walked out of a shop that has given bad service, then you must expect your customers to do the same. Customers will only return if you offer them a quality service or product. Essentially, good customer service means establishing a good working relationship with the customer.
