2.3.2 Sentence structure
Well constructed sentences help make writing logical and clear. Compose clear sentences that:
- use words that are understandable, concrete, strong and positive
- have unity: that is, they contain one main idea
- are logical so that related words and ideas are kept together
- are grammatically correct
- are short and concise
- short sentences are easier to understand
- if in doubt, write two sentences instead of one
- vary the length of your sentences to make your writing interesting, but only use long sentences occasionally.
Activity 2c
- Look through one of your own pieces of writing and consider the sentence structure.
- Apply the Fog index to half a page of your writing (see page 433 of your textbook).
