2.3.4 Rhythm

An excellent way to check for coherence in your writing is to read it out loud to yourself. You will easily hear any breaks in coherence or grammatical mistakes you may have made; you can then make any necessary corrections. You will also be able to listen to the rhythm of the piece, and make adjustments you think necessary to add interest for the reader.

Activity 2e

Read aloud a section of the textbook and a section of your own writing. Do they have rhythm? If not, how could they be improved?

There are other factors involved in successful business writing. One of these is tone . A positive tone develops a positive relationship with the reader (Lahiff & Penrose 1997): a negative one will alienate or possibly anger your reader. Layout is also important to business writing as a poor layout may confuse the reader and create disinterest in the topic.

Activity 2f

Surf the Internet for examples of web pages with good or bad layout. Consider how the layout affects you. What are the specific elements affecting your opinion of the pages?
