3.1 Overview of academic writing

Dwyer (2005) and Windschuttle and Elliott (2001) suggest that a piece of written communication is the culmination of careful research, planning, writing and editing. This is especially the case for academic writing as the end result is often assessed. The principles of good writing provided in chapter 2 are just as applicable in this chapter. Rigorous research and a clear and logical writing style are therefore essential components of academic writing. Academic writing begins with an analysis of the question or task in order to guide the research process.
