4.2 Intercultural, cross-cultural and intracultural communication

The terms intercultural and cross-cultural communication are sometimes used as synonyms. Read Dwyer (2005) pages 33-34 and consider the differences between these terms. Gudykunst and Kim (1997) also distinguish between the terms:

intercultural communication is a transactional, symbolic process involving the attribution of meaning between people from different cultures. (p 13)

cross cultural [communication] implies a comparison of some phenomena across cultures (p 14)

Intracultural communication is communication within the same culture. However, both Dwyer (2005) and Gudykunst and Kim (1997) point out that communication within cultures may also be affected by some difference. Consequently, the whole range of human interaction - whether looking at it from an intercultural, cross-cultural or intracultural perspective - can be improved by better understanding of, and coping with, the communication process.
