5.1 Overview of interpersonal communication
Covey (1989) proposes that our character is a composite of our habits. We can relate this to the communication process by thinking about how we communicate in certain situations. For example, do you tend to avoid conflict? Are you assertive? Do you tend to 'switch off' when you become disinterested in a conversation? All of these reflect communication habits, and habits can be changed.
A competent communicator is able to develop and maintain positive and effective interpersonal relationships by engaging in good communication habits such as active listening, speaking clearly, being assertive and demonstrating a high degree of openness.
Activity 5a
Think of a person (preferably someone in a managerial position) who you think is an effective and competent communicator. Visualise that person interacting with others. What makes their communication effective?
