5.3.1 Developing a positive self-concept

Self-efficacy is the belief in one's ability to do a task - a 'can do' attitude (Kreitner & Kinicki 1995). A high level of self-efficacy can lead to a feeling of confidence and this can lead to more effective, assertive behaviour and a positive self-concept. Similarly, Dunphy and Dick (1993) believe a positive self-concept can be developed by becoming more of a learning person than a self-defeating person.

Activity 5i

  1. Read Reading 5.2 which overviews the learning person and the self-defeating person. Do you tend more towards the learning person behaviours or the self-defeating person behaviours? If you are more self-defeating, how can you become more of a learning person?
  2. Work through Table 5.3 in your textbook. Can you identify yourself clearly? Do you define yourself positively? Do you behave effectively?
