6.3.4 Proxemics

Proxemics is the study of the relationship between space and communication. Humans stake out and maintain territories and attempt to control bubbles of space around them. We place great value on this space and defend it against intrusion. (Wars are a violent example of this defence.) Territories are stationary locations in which we feel more comfortable and most in control. A territory may be a favourite chair at home or a space at work such as an office or workstation. This has implications for the workplace. For example, the arrangement of chairs and tables in a space should be determined by the needs of the people using them. If supervisory staff members in a workplace are looking for open discussion with employees, they will not get it if there is a conflict situation set up by the furniture. A lounge arrangement with everyone having an equal position is much more useful, or a round table with everyone sitting on the same type of chair.
