8.1 Overview of public presentations

The ability to speak publicly, to hold an audience's attention, to persuade them to believe in you or to buy your product may determine the level of success you enjoy in your career. Many business people miss great opportunities to impress others because they fear public speaking and try to avoid it. It is, however, impossible to avoid and essential to your success, so to achieve your aims in business you must work towards being a proficient public speaker. To demonstrate how essential it is that you develop these skills, consider that one of the most important presentations that you will ever give will be an interview in which you will have to convince a group of people that you are the ideal candidate for the job.

Unfortunately, being an interesting presenter is not always a natural talent: on the other hand it can be learnt with study and practice. The key to a successful presentation is effective preparation. As if to illustrate the truth of this statement, you will notice that all communication texts which include a section on public speaking emphasise the importance of preparation (Churchman 1999).
