8.3 Visual aids and technology in presentations
Presenting is as much about delivering a message as it is about stimulating the senses of the audience. A boring presentation will dull our senses. An exciting presentation will stimulate the senses and encourage the audience to become more mentally and emotionally involved with the message. We must bear in mind that with the rapid advances in technology we are now more frequently presenting information to an audience which has experienced extensive visual stimulation - television, movies and computer graphics and games. Audiences respond well to visual stimulation and, accordingly, you should never underestimate the value of good visual support.
Visual aids can help to:
- crystallise vague ideas
- help listeners to remember information
- overcome audience boredom and increase retention by making the audience engage a sense or senses other than just listening
- signpost the message to keep the listener on track
However, presenters should not allow the visual aids to take over as they may detract from the message. Remember that nothing will ensure the success of your presentation more than good preparation and lively presentation.
