3.2 Focussing on ethics
The term ethics refers to the rules and principles that define right and wrong conduct, but the purpose of this section is not to tell you what behaviour is right or wrong in business - that would be both presumptuous and unrealistic - but to raise your awareness and consciousness of the importance of encouraging and fostering ethical behaviour within your organisation.
Business ethics is a topical subject, and is in general interrelated with the previous topic of social responsibility. However, there is nothing new about ethical or unethical behaviour. We have had ethical and unethical managers as long as we have had businesses.
Television and newspaper reports often depict stories of the latest corporate scandal and eagerly tell of the latest corporate figure heading for court or prison. When you view these reports it is likely that you will draw some conclusions as to whether you considered the behaviour acceptable or unacceptable. This is your choice. Ethics is about your personal values.
