Conclusion
Key management concept
Effective management begins with effective decision making about what the organisation should and should not do and a vision of the direction in which the organisation should be headed.
Perhaps the measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with - but whether you have the same problem the next year.
Decision making is the process through which you identify problems and opportunities and attempt to resolve them. Opportunities provide a vehicle for organisational innovation. It is also important to consider whether you should involve others in the process.
You may find the following an interesting story upon which to conclude:
Recently a shipping company secured a contract to move a series of transportable huts from a main port.
These huts could not be pre-received into the terminal where they were to be loaded onto the ships. Modification of a forklift to handle the huts was not possible because the process was lengthy, complicated and expensive. The shore crane that was usually used to lift huts onto the ships could not be used in this case because it was often working other ships and was too expensive.
The huts could not be lifted directly onto the ship from the back of the trucks used to transport them from the manufacturer's yard. The trucks could make the journey only at specified times of the day and it was too expensive to keep them loaded in the terminal for lengthy periods.
Can you think of a solution?
After you have given the problem some thought, turn over the page for the answer.
