Conclusion

To be an effective strategic thinker you need the ability to recognise and interpret environmental trends along with a ruthless awareness of the organisation's strengths and weaknesses associated with the available resources. Strategic thinkers are able to view the organisation and the environment from a 'holistic' perspective, seeing the wider picture, having vision and being prepared to consider change.

Strategic management is why organisations of a similar nature and within the same industry pursue different paths. A manager, with teams and individuals, works towards the organisation's mission and goals within the constraints of the organisation and the outside environment - and in the light of his or her own perceptions and abilities. In this way, an organisation will develop a performance 'culture' and will 'move' and 'behave' in ways peculiar to itself.

Your organisation has its own distinctive style of strategic management - of working to achieve the company's mission and goals. Part of the role of a manager is to work with people towards that achievement.

We leave this chapter with a thought: Don't be afraid to try something new. An amateur built the Ark. Professionals built the Titanic (Liba S., of Passaic , New Jersey ).
