1.3.2 Challenges
If you think about the concepts of the new model of SCM as described in the preceding sections, you will appreciate that management of supply chains is essentially complex. Firstly, there are the essential logistics-related activities or core operational activities and then comes the integration across the supply chain. Can you visualise the challenges?

Activity 1.3
Do an internet research on each of the following types of business enterprises and try to map the supply chain of each.
A chain store retailer, such as Woolworth or Wal-mart. A computer manufacturer, such as Dell or Compaq
An automobile maker, such as Toyota or Chrysler.
(You can find a lot of information in the internet. Keep your search open to include any similar firms if you do not get enough information on any of these particular firms.)
The following figure shows the multi-tier supply chain of Chrysler (USA). This is definitely a complex supply chain with hundreds of suppliers at one end and dealers and customers at the other end. Apply the logistics concepts of efficient inventory and distribution management with the extended supply chain concept of relationship management at both ends in order to leverage maximum value from the chain and you will see the challenges of supply chain management for Chrysler. The supply chain of other firms in the list above may appear simpler in comparison but remember that each supply chain has its own challenges and the supply chain management issues are essentially complex.

Read about the relevant issues in Section 1.3 of your text.
The complexities discussed in your text can be summed up as follows:
- The challenge of intra and inter-organisational integration: This requires change management and conflict resolution approach across traditional functional and inter enterprise boundaries.
- The challenge of demand management: The shift from traditional forecast driven manufacturing and inventory decisions to real time demand based manufacturing and inventory policy is one of the key focus areas. The goal is challenging.
- The challenge of supply management and internal cost and performance management in an environment of unpredictability.
- The challenge of short life cycle products and rapid obsolescence.
