1.2 Technology and supply chain management
While competition has provided the impetus for optimisation, technology has made it possible for supply chains to be designed and managed in more efficient ways. The role of technology is so central in modern supply chain management that Metz (1998) has called supply chain management a 'rocket science'. To describe his observation in his own language:
I contend that supply chain management is rocket science at its core. It uses advanced technology, information management, and operations research math to plan and control an expanding complexity of factors to better produce and deliver products in a customer pleasing way.
The role of technology in the design and management of supply chains is generally well recognised and we have seen how advances in information and computer technologies have aided the transition from physical distribution management to integrated supply chain management. There have been parallel advancements in communication, manufacturing and transportation technologies and these too have worked as enablers of advanced supply chain management. All these technologies have enabled businesses to coordinate complex multiple supply chain functions and to respond quickly and efficiently to changing market situations.
The following reading provides a good account of the impacts of technology on the development of supply chain management philosophy.
