Overview of chapter 2
We identified information technology as one of the main enablers of success in supply chain management. The role of information technology in the modern integrated supply chain will become more and more evident as we proceed with this subject. Many of the subsequent chapters will refer to the concept of business process integration which spans across corporate and inter-company boundaries. It will be seen that the ability to acquire, integrate and process information from disparate business units is an essential prerequisite for modern businesses as much of their success in a competitive marketplace will depend upon the management of advanced and integrated information systems.
The subject of information management at this level is complex, more so because it is undergoing rapid changes. In this chapter we will touch upon some fundamental issues regarding information systems for supply chain management. The idea is to introduce basic concepts which will aid in the understanding of subsequent chapters.
