3.5 Key features of a network configuration DSS
The main features of a DSS used in network configuration would be the flexibility to incorporate in the model all the relevant elements of a particular supply chain and all possible options regarding configuration of the supply chain, with respect to facility location, flow diversion, opening or closing of facilities etc. It also must have the means of incorporating managerial decisions regarding service level.
One of the key requirements of a DSS is to help the manager with decision effectiveness. In an attempt to create flexible systems to use in data analysis, the effectiveness of the final decisions must not be overlooked. Ballou's research found that user friendliness, technical support, optimality of solution and data interface were the key performance elements for users of DSS software. Faster processing time and flexibility were features which were appreciated by most users (Ballou & Masters 1999).
