3.4 Logistics network design and decision support systems

The modern approach to designing the configuration of a supply chain network is based on decision support systems. We have already seen that DSSs are increasingly used in supply chain management at all levels of planning. The use of the DSS is becoming more and more popular with the increasing capability of modern computers. Computer processing power has made it possible to solve problems involving huge data bases and complex mathematical algorithms. Simchi-Levi (2000) argues that the recent emphasis on the DSS in supply chain management lies in the convergence of information visibility and computing power.
