We are familiar with many of the concepts of inventory management. The following is a brief refresher:

Inventory policy . Inventory policy consists of guidelines regarding what to purchase or manufacture, when to take action and in what quantity. It also includes decisions regarding geographical inventory positioning. A second aspect of policy concerns inventory management practice.

Service level. This is the performance target specified by the management. This can be set as an order cycle time, case fill rate or order fill rate. Inventory position . This is the inventory held in hand and in the pipeline. This is a very important concept and you should be able differentiate between inventory level and inventory position.
