6.1 Introduction

We have concentrated so far on one of the two core aspects of logistics management, inventory. We will now look at the other core logistics activity which is a key determinant of supply chain success. It is imperative that we view any transportation and distribution strategy within the contexts of the emerging integrated supply chain models.

In this chapter, we will look at transportation and distribution strategies in the light of centralised and decentralised decision making and will explore various options available for distribution which are compatible with the overall supply chain goals.
