7.2.1 The purpose

The purpose of playing the Beer Game is to provide participants with hands on experience of the challenges in managing supply chains. The Beer Game (or the Beer Distribution Game) is a role playing game. The computerised version allows individuals to play the game, with the computer taking up the roles of other players in the supply chain. The Beer Game is a good demonstration of the chaos, confusion and structural problems in supply chains. The result is intended to demonstrate the benefits of integrated supply chain management and the sharing of information across the various supply chain members.
