9.2.1 Global business forces
In your text
Read Section 8.1 in your text.
We have discussed in the preceding section the most obvious directions in which businesses have reoriented themselves. A more elaborate and contemporary view on business forces in the new millennium is provided in your text. What is important for you to understand is that globalisation is altering the competitive environment and proactive firms are always seeking new ways to realign their supply chain to secure a superior competitive position. The new business orientation is contributing not only to the realignment of existing supply chains but also to the development and configuration of new logistics networks to open up new markets for raw material, technology and factor input (labour), as well as new markets in which to sell it's products. It is for this reason that globalisation was identified as one of the key drivers of future supply chain management (see chapter 1). Read the following ( Reading 9.1) which accounts the changing business orientation of businesses in the face of forces of globalisation.
Reading 9.1
Camuffo, A; Romano, P & Vinelli, A (2001, Fall) 'Back to the future: Benetton transforms its global network', MIT Sloan Management Review , volume 43,
number 1, pp.46-52.
Activity 9.1
Referring to Reading 9.1, write an analytical summary of about 500 words, highlighting the following:
- How Benetton's global network is changing and what the forces contributing to this new business orientation are?
- Do you think that the Benetton model is likely to be an exemplary one for global supply chain management of similar products?
