3.5 Gaining individual and team commitment to action

The communication of actions or decisions must be timely and conducted in a manner that can be understood by team members and individuals.

Figure 4 Individual co-orientation to decisions

In the topic on problem solving and decision making we have learned that the communication of decisions is much easier where it holds meaning to each individual and individuals have an existing understanding gained through participation in the decision process The more individuals participate in decision processes the greater the collective experience and 'connection' with implementation processes.

Table 5 Staff understanding or commitment to action

Problem Description Suggested Solution

Attention

Employees need to have a strong motivation

Strengthen the introduction and provide clear advantages and features for the training. Initial attention should then be reinforced as outlined below.

Relevance

Employees fail to identify the relevance of the information

Avoid lecturing and solicit feedback and continuously confirm individual relevance of topic.

Ownership

Employees reject anything other than their own experiences

Don't provide information in a 'lecture' format. Provide coaching and permit work with team members to illustrate application

Low involvement

Employees lack commitment or participation in decision making

Add relevant activities and solicit feedback and personal reflections

Too complex

Employees lack reference points or underpinning knowledge to make sense of process or content of a decision

Confirm structure and break down complex issues into manageable 'chunks'. Continuously summarise and reinforce with tangible reference points (real examples of action).

Have the employee summarise their understanding.

Passive acceptance of any and all information

Employee is over exposed to information or very is passive filtering information

Add active exercises that require application of information. Add active team work, problem centre exercises, discussion or coaching by expert staff members.
