Motivate and build commitment

Introduction

I can live for two months on a good compliment.
- Mark Twain

In this chapter we examine how to motivate and gain commitment from individuals within a team setting. Team leadership means moving together not controlling individuals. It is about maximising the team's contribution to business goals and achieving the outcomes while gaining individual commitment.

Achieving commitment and sustaining the motivation of subordinates requires the adoption of appropriate styles of leadership. Individuals and teams are also easier to lead when they are motivated to achieve the set outcomes. Often rewards for individual and team contributions enable the manager to leverage commitment. Some workers are motivated not by financial rewards but through participation and shared responsibility. Others, it will be seen, would find this a factor that would reduce commitment. Managers need to understand reward structures and how they can be used to motivate and leverage individual commitment.

The chapter will also cover empowerment and lead to a further examination of sources of motivational inducement systems and conditions for individual reward
