Activity 3
Investigate Occupational, Health and Safety legislation in the workplace
Workplace policies and procedures on health and safety should be based on, and conform to, the various OH&S legislation within your state or territory.
- Investigate the appropriate OH&S legislation that applies to your workplace and obtain a copy of the appropriate legislation. These can be found at Government info bookshops, State information centres, the Internet, public libraries or your workplace. A list of suggested contact organisations is included on the following page.
- Ensure that you cover all the areas that appear on the following page when researching.
- Tick each area as you source the appropriate legislation.
- Tick off the following areas as you find the relevant legislation
- First aid in the workplace
- Hazardous substances
- Manual handling
- Fire and evacuation
- Injury reporting
- A copy of the OH&S Act and associated regulations
- Any other relevant and approved codes of practice
Further activities
- Make yourself conversant with the legislation that you have sourced.
- Compare and contrast the legislation with your organisation's policies and procedures on health and safety in the workplace.
- Note any discrepancies between what should be done, according to legislation, and what is done according to the policies or procedures at your workplace.
- Write a report for submission to your manager detailing your findings and make recommendations for possible improvements to policies and procedures that address your findings. Such recommendations should be designed to ensure that company policies and procedures conform to the legislative requirements.
- This report should be evaluated by your direct report/manager for accuracy of content and reasonableness of your recommendations for improvement.
- The report should be placed in your workplace portfolio as evidence of your understanding and comprehension of this subject matter.
