Establishing and administering safe work environments

Introduction

This chapter is the first of our second section on occupational health and safety (OHS/OH&S) in the workplace and environment. This second section in our chapter Manage people and performance in a transport and logistics business introduces OHS concepts and requirements for managers seeking to apply them to their own operational area.

Workplace safety is an area that is subject to a wide range of laws, regulations and guidelines. In Australia it is the role of government to enact laws that relate to safety, and the role of the courts to interpret and implement these laws. The greatest responsibility for workplace safety, however, rests with both employers and employees who are expected to comply with legal requirements.

The key point to be addressed in this element of our study is the need to give high priority to the establishment of an occupational health and safety (OHS) system. To do this it is vital that employers, managers and workers work together to understand the legal requirements that govern a workplace and contribute to the development of policies and procedures that form an effective safety system.

It is noted that comprehensive online study notes and guides are available from Safetyline Institute, an online education and training facility established by WorkSafe Western Australia , a State government enforcement agency. It is possible to log in for free and access study notes or you can enrol to complete courses at http://www.safetyline.wa.gov.au/institute/defaultnew.asp . You may choose to use their materials rather than the ones provided with this topic.
