6.7.1 Complete a OHS training needs analysis

Activity 6

How to complete an OH&S Training needs analysis.

The objective of this exercise is to select an area discussed in this study guide and analyse team members' proficiency in that area. Once you have selected a section of the workbook (e.g. conducting safety inspections) write down in the space below four things that a person would be required to do to complete this job adequately (e.g. plan the inspection, etc.) within your team, or one with which you are familiar.

  1. List the four requirements that are necessary to adequately complete the activity
      •

Once you have written down four requirements also write down how an individual can demonstrate that they are competent in each of the four requirements. For example, to demonstrate competence in planning an inspection a person may need to hold a meeting with all interested parties to discuss inspection priorities and timetables.

Requirement 4

Once you have filled in both of these sections you are ready to complete the training matrix over the page. Simply fill in the spaces for the requirements of the activity and the tasks needed to demonstrate competence. Once you have done this you are ready to rate the person (or their team) as either competent (CY) or not yet competent (NYC). To do this circle either CY or NYC in the box that corresponds with that particular requirement. An example is included.

The purpose of the training matrix is to discover where an individual or team needs extra training to make them competent. Once problem areas are identified it is necessary to arrange the training to assist team members to develop skills.

Activity 7

Once the training needs of a person, or group of people, have been established the next step is to organise for that training to be conducted. If an organisation has a section specifically devoted to training then it is logical to discuss your training needs analysis with this section and seek agreement as to the need for training, content, venue and timing.

  1. As a learning exercise discover:
    • Who is responsible for training within your organisation?
    • What training programs are available to staff that are related to safety in the workplace?
    • What are the requirements for accessing this training?
  2. Discuss with your manager how you might implement training within your workplace aimed at improving the health and safety of workers.
  3. Include your findings and suggestions in your workplace portfolio as evidence of learning and application of skills in the workplace.
