7.2 Hygiene
Hygiene is about keeping yourself, food areas and toilet areas clean. The concept of hygiene as a major OH&S issue has arisen from a number of workplaces.
Food safety also includes a major parallel with an OH&S system. Under the Australia New Zealand Food Authority Act 1991 (the ANZFA Act) the Australian Commonwealth government agreed to establish a regime of food quality and control with New Zealand . The act established a legal and regulatory framework - much like OH&S - for food standards and compliance requirements in all workplaces and industries. Under these requirements it is a criminal offence in Australia to supply food which does not comply with relevant food standards. This reinforces the wider requirements for OH&S to ensure clean and safe workplaces and to ensure that staff comply with all provisions necessary to deliver 'food safety'.

Avoiding disease and health problems within a workplace may extend beyond food handling, storage and transport, and personal cleanliness. It may involve good housekeeping - such as keeping work sites clear and free from hazards such as potential trip or slippage accidents, fumes, waste and such like.
