4.3.3 PERT
Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is another way of assessing project time. It is very similar to CPA and with the computerisation of project planning techniques PERT and CPA are often used as interchangeable terms. PERT uses the arrow diagram but differs when it estimates the duration of activities. PERT requires three estimates for every activity:
- The most optimistic duration
- The most likely duration
- The most pessimistic duration
More advanced network and PERT planning tools can link actions with times. These are commonly called time charts. Time charts are commonly referred to as "Project Networks". Drawing a project network requires logic. The most common errors occur because of a lack of logic. The purpose of a network diagram with times tied to tasks is to schedule the milestones (key events) by which to control and measure the project time.
