5.4.3 Creative decision making

Creative decision making is spontaneous and involves all employees in the process. It is premised on the following factors:

Activity 6

Complete the set of tools provided below. The purpose of this package is to enable a group decision making exercise and an in and out box exercise to be used to form a basis for assessing:

  1. An individual's contribution to team decision making and problem solving;
  2. Peer assessment of an individual's contribution to decision making and problem solving exercise; and
  3. Peer assessment of a team's effectiveness.

The following four instruments will complete this set of assessments:

  1. Some problem scenarios for the team being assessed to complete.
  2. peer assessment tool for an observing peer to assess the contribution of an individual to the team working on a problem.

Note:
Many of the tools being discussed are covered elsewhere in other topic area. Decision trees, Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) and tools such a critical path Analysis will be dealt with in the project planning topic area. Force Field Analysis and Kurt Lewin's approach has been covered in change management. Other tools such as Pareto analysis and Ishigawa problem solving tool will be covered in the measuring quality topic area.

Having access some decision making tools and techniques now answer the following.

  1. Define each of Edward DeBono's six thinking hats.
  2. In what way do Pareto analysis differ from say, Force Field analysis.
  3. Which tool is the most useful for you?
  4. Now deploy your decision making and problem solving skills by completing the following scenarios.
