4.3 Financial Managers

Managers choose from alternative possible directions, make decisions in situations of apparent chaos, initiate actions, and select people to implement such actions in accordance with established policies, objectives and rules of the firm. Financial Managers focus on the application and sourcing of funds that support the operational decisions made by the management.

The functions of operational and financial management may be performed by the same person in small businesses, or shared by a number of people in large ones. In larger companies management is often divided into three tiers or levels. These are:

Institutional
Managers are concerned with relationships between the organisation and the external environment

Upper to middle management
These managers implement systems to coordinate and initiate activities that are intended to achieve the objectives of the organization.

Technical Managers
These managers are responsible for production, marketing and the supply of goods and services to the market.

Financial management is a function that often exists across the levels depending on the situation.
