5.5 Regulation and financial institutions
The capital market is made up of financial intermediaries that facilitate the movement of funds from entities with surplus funds to those that require them. Financial intermediaries comprise people and institutions, such as:
- Reserve Bank of Australia
- merchant Banks
- banks (savings banks, trading banks and special purpose banks)
- money market dealers
- finance firms
- building societies and Credit unions/co-operatives
- institutional Investors (including life insurance firms, superannuation and pension funds)
- general insurance firms
- unit trusts
