2.4 The path to accreditation

Before a company is accredited (or registered or certified), it has to demonstrate its ability to meet the requirements laid out in the standard. The ability is "audited" by any accreditation agency chosen by the company to come and do an "external audit" for them. Various agencies are authorised to do this, including traditional classification societies like:

Lloyds Register
Det Norske Veritas
Germanischer Lloyd
Bureau Veritas

The quality system has to be documented so that the management and work teams understand what is required of them. Documentation of the system can be seen to progress through three stages.
