Evaluating the future of e-commerce

Introduction

E-commerce has changed the value proposition to which many transport and logistic companies ascribe. By this we mean the business models adopted can now leverage the Internet and ICTs to make statements and promises to customers (lower prices, faster service, accurate orders, visibility and tracking of shipping, etc), staff (simpler processes, collaboration, safer workplaces, etc.) and shareholders (greater value for money, shorter time to market growth or income collection, etc). Even in changing global marketplaces using the Internet and related ICTs to build more robust business models can actually assist ‘future proof’ businesses and their relationships. E-commerce is therefore not just about acquiring new capabilities but reinforcing sound business practices with enabling technologies.

This module presents ideas on the future of transport and logistics and the role and influence e-commerce may play in that future. The purpose of such a study is to provide you with an opportunity to consider and understand some of the trends, issues and technologies relevant to making business decisions about e-commerce, e-business strategy and the future.

In effect, an understanding of the future is an integral part of developing the strategic ‘story’ discussed in Module 10. This was presented diagrammatically as shown below.

The notes take less time to interpret the trends: instead, readings and a series of activities are provided to stimulate personal, reflective learning. As such there are more readings than in most modules. This is balanced by the emphasis on analytical understanding, rather than extensive written work.
